(14 customer reviews)

Price range: £36.99 through £94.99

  • Built to bounce back — Fast recovery from football matches, dog zoomies, and everything else your family throws at it. This grass doesn’t just survive heavy use—it thrives on it
  • Handles dog urine without the drama — Selected varieties with natural resistance to nitrogen burn. Yellow patches become a thing of the past
  • Soft enough to play on, tough enough to last — Dense, cushioned growth that’s gentle on bare feet and knees, but won’t wear down to mud

Your garden should be lived in, not looked at.

Let’s be honest. You didn’t buy a house with a garden so you could stand at the window telling everyone to stay off the grass.

You want the kids playing football. You want the dog tearing around. You want summer evenings on the lawn without worrying about worn patches and muddy tracks into the house.

But here’s the problem: most grass isn’t designed for real family life.

Standard lawn seed assumes your garden is a display piece, occasional light foot traffic, no pets, and certainly no slide tackles in front of the makeshift goal. The moment real life happens, it gives up. Worn patches appear. The grass thins out. Before you know it, you’re looking at a muddy mess wondering where it all went wrong.

Family & Fur Tough Turf is built different.

We’ve combined fast-establishing ryegrass varieties (the same family used on Premier League pitches) with deep-rooting fescues that recover quickly from damage. The result? A lawn that handles daily abuse and comes back for more.

Specifically engineered for:

Heavy foot traffic – Whether it’s kids playing or just the daily path to the washing line, this grass doesn’t wear down. The dense growth habit means even high-traffic areas stay green.

Dog damage – Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Dog urine kills grass because of the nitrogen concentration. While no grass is completely immune, our selected varieties have shown significantly better resistance and faster recovery than standard lawn seed. The difference is noticeable within weeks.

Quick recovery – Grass gets damaged. That’s life. What matters is how fast it bounces back. Tough Turf’s aggressive growth habit means worn areas fill back in quickly, so you’re not constantly reseeding the same spots.

What you won’t get:

We’ll be straight with you, this isn’t ornamental grass. It won’t give you a bowling-green finish or be suitable for cutting to 10mm. It’s a working lawn for working families, and it looks like one (in the best possible way). Dense, green, healthy, and actually used.

Perfect for:

  • Family gardens with children
  • Homes with dogs (any size, any breed)
  • Play areas and kickabout zones
  • High-traffic paths and shortcuts
  • Gardens that actually get lived in

How to use:

For new lawns: Prepare soil, sow evenly, water well, and keep off for 4-6 weeks while establishing.

For overseeding worn areas: Rake to remove dead grass, scatter seed, tread in lightly, and water. Continue using the rest of the lawn normally.

For dog urine spots: Rake out dead grass, loosen soil, sow seed, and water heavily. Tip: watering the area immediately after your dog uses it helps dilute the nitrogen and prevent future damage.

Your garden is for living. This grass knows it.

Works well but overseeding needed in autumn

Sowed in spring and had a brilliant lawn all summer. Come October the high traffic areas started to show wear so I did an autumn overseed which has filled things back in nicely. I think with dogs you just have to accept a bit of seasonal maintenance. The seed itself is excellent and grows quickly each time.

Decent but not perfect in heavy traffic areas

The majority of the lawn looks fantastic and has held up really well against our two collies. The one area that has struggled is the strip right by the back door where the dogs charge out every time someone knocks. That section has thinned despite overseeding twice. Everywhere else is brilliant though so I cannot be too harsh.

Thick growth that stands up to daily dog walks

We let our dogs out in the garden multiple times a day and they always follow the same paths. Previously this wore the grass down to bare soil within weeks. Good Grow seed has produced thick dense growth that actually withstands the daily traffic. Still looks good after several months of constant use. Would recommend to any dog owner.

Urine burn is massively reduced

We have two female dogs which means concentrated urine spots everywhere. With our old lawn it was a constant battle of brown circles. Since switching to Good Grow the burn marks are so much less noticeable. The grass still yellows slightly if both dogs go in the exact same spot but it recovers within a week. Huge improvement.

Survived the summer with two dogs and three kids

We put our garden through absolute hell over the summer. Two border collies charging about plus three kids playing football on it daily. The lawn has thinned a little in the goal mouth areas but honestly it has held up far better than I expected. Thick dense grass that recovers quickly from wear.

Perfect for a busy family garden

Three kids a dog and a rabbit all share our garden. This seed has created a lawn that copes with all of them. It is soft enough for the little one to crawl on but tough enough for the older two to play football. The dog does her usual circuits and the lawn just takes it. Exactly what we needed.

Handles our staffie no problem

Our staffie is not exactly gentle on the garden. She sprints laps every morning and digs when she is bored. This grass has coped with everything she throws at it. The recovery rate after wear is impressive and the urine spots are barely noticeable now. Really happy we made the switch.

Great recovery speed

What sets this apart from other seed I have used is how quickly it recovers. The dogs will wear a patch down on a Monday and by Friday it has bounced back. That recovery speed makes all the difference when you have active pets. The lawn always looks presentable even with heavy daily use.

Finally a lawn we can actually use

We had been telling the kids to stay off the grass for years because it turned to mud the moment anyone looked at it. Ripped it all out and started fresh with Good Grow. Now we have a lawn that actually handles real life. The dogs run on it and the kids play on it and it still looks great. Should have done this years ago.

Soft on paws and tough on wear

What I like about this seed is the texture of the grass. It is soft and cushioned which is nice for the dogs to lie on but it does not wear down to mud like our old lawn did. We have a golden retriever who spends most of the day outside and the grass stays thick and green. Excellent balance of soft and hardwearing.

No more yellow patches

The main reason I bought this was the urine resistance claim. Our spaniel has a favourite spot right in the middle of the lawn and it was always a yellow circle of dead grass. Since reseeding with Good Grow that patch stays green. It is not completely immune but the difference is night and day compared to what we had before.

Good germination but took patience

Took about two and a half weeks before I saw much happening which was longer than I hoped. Once it got going though the growth was strong and even. The grass itself is soft underfoot but clearly tough. Our terrier digs at it and it bounces back within days. Good product just needs a bit of patience at the start.

Neighbours think we laid turf

Sowed this in early spring on what was basically a bare patch of compacted earth. Kept the dogs off it for three weeks while it established and now it looks like we had professional turf laid. Thick even growth and a lovely deep green colour. The neighbours genuinely asked which turf company we used.

Our labrador has met his match

We have a two year old labrador who treats the garden like his personal racetrack. Every spring we were left with a mud bath where a lawn used to be. Sowed Good Grow Dog Friendly seed in April and within three weeks had strong thick growth. Four months on and even his favourite sprint path along the fence is still holding up. Best grass seed we have tried by far.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much is delivery?
A: Free

Q: How long does delivery take?
A: 1-3 working days

Q: Is this grass completely immune to dog urine damage?
A: No grass is 100% immune to urine damage. The nitrogen concentration will affect any plant. However, this blend uses varieties (perennial ryegrass and tall fescue) that show significantly better resistance and faster recovery than standard lawn seed. You’ll see noticeably less yellowing and quicker bounce-back.

Q: What makes grass “dog friendly”?
A: Three things: (1) Hardwearing varieties that tolerate heavy foot traffic and play, (2) Fast recovery from damage so worn areas fill back in quickly, and (3) Better tolerance to the nitrogen in dog urine. This blend delivers all three.

Q: Can my dog use the lawn while the new seed is establishing?
A: Keep dogs off newly seeded areas for 4-6 weeks to allow establishment. Use temporary fencing or redirect your dog to other parts of the garden. Once established, this grass is built for daily dog use.

Q: Will this grass cope with large dogs?
A: Yes. The perennial ryegrass varieties in this blend are the same family used on professional sports pitches. They’re designed for heavy wear. Larger dogs create more impact, but this grass recovers quickly from play damage.

Q: How do I repair existing dog urine patches?
A: Rake out the dead grass, loosen the top layer of soil, sow seed at 35-50g per square metre, and water heavily. Pro tip: water the spot immediately after your dog uses it in future. Diluting the urine reduces nitrogen concentration and prevents new damage.

Q: Is this grass safe for dogs to eat?
A: Yes, all grass varieties in this blend are non-toxic and safe for dogs who like to graze. It contains no added chemicals or treatments that could harm pets.

Q: How quickly does it recover from damage?
A: Perennial ryegrass is one of the fastest-recovering grass types available. Minor wear damage typically fills in within 2-3 weeks during the growing season. More significant damage may take 4-6 weeks.

Q: Is this suitable for puppies who dig?
A: The grass itself is hardwearing, but no grass can withstand determined digging. For puppies, consider protecting newly seeded areas until the grass establishes deep roots (6-8 weeks). Once established, this grass has aggressive root systems that resist casual pawing.

Q: Can I use this on a dog run or high-traffic path?
A: Yes, but very high-traffic areas (daily concentrated use in the same spot) will challenge any grass. Consider creating a dedicated path with bark mulch or paving stones, then use this seed for surrounding lawn areas that get regular but varied use.

Q: Should I fertilise my lawn differently with dogs?
A: Dogs already add nitrogen via urine, so you may need less nitrogen fertiliser than a pet-free lawn. Watch for signs of over-fertilisation (very dark green or burnt patches) and adjust accordingly. Always water in fertiliser thoroughly and keep dogs off until absorbed.

Q: Will this help with muddy paws in winter?
A: Dense grass coverage helps reduce mud compared to thin or bare lawns. However, all lawns get muddy in wet winter conditions. This grass maintains better winter density than many alternatives, which helps, but isn’t a complete mud solution.

Q: How often should I overseed with dogs?
A: With regular dog use, we recommend overseeding annually in spring or autumn to maintain thick coverage. Pay particular attention to favourite toilet spots and high-traffic areas. These benefit from more frequent attention.
